Elliptical Structures

What are Elliptical Structures?

Elliptical structures occur when part of a sentence is left out because it is understood from the context. In other words, some words or phrases are omitted to avoid repetition or make the sentence shorter, but the meaning remains clear.

Why do we use Elliptical Structures?

  • To avoid repeating information.
  • To make sentences more concise.
  • To make conversations or writing smoother and less redundant.

Examples of Elliptical Structures:

In responses:

Full sentence:
Are you coming to the party?
Yes, I am coming to the party.

Elliptical form:
Are you coming to the party?
Yes, I am.

(The phrase "coming to the party" is omitted because it is understood.)

In comparisons:

Full sentence:
She likes coffee more than I like coffee.

Elliptical form:
She likes coffee more than I do.

(The repeated phrase "like coffee" is omitted.)

In coordination:

Summary:
